Who we help

Lead-paint requirements in New York City mostly fall on owners of older rental buildings and the people who manage or work on them. We take inquiries from:

Landlords & building owners

Owners of pre-1960 multiple dwellings, older 1–2 family rentals, and non-owner-occupied co-op or condo units. Landlord information

Property managers

Managing agents coordinating unit turnovers, common-area work, or open violations across one or more buildings. Property manager information

Contractors

General contractors and renovation firms whose projects include lead-paint work they want handled separately. Contractor partnerships

Real estate investors

Buyers and owners of older NYC buildings who want to understand the lead-paint work a property may need. Ask a question

Common reasons people reach out

  • An HPD Notice of Violation for lead-based paint with a correction deadline — HPD violation correction
  • Preparing a vacant apartment for turnover in an older building
  • XRF paint testing found lead-based paint on doors, windows, or other surfaces
  • A child under six lives in, or has moved into, a unit in an older building
  • Planned renovation or repairs that will disturb painted surfaces
  • You’re not sure what applies to your building and want to talk it through

Every property is different. What’s required depends on the building’s age, the specific violation or test results, who lives in the unit, and the work involved — so we start by understanding your situation rather than assuming.

What happens after you reach out

  1. Call or send a short inquiry. Share the property’s borough or ZIP code, the type of property, and what’s going on.
  2. A team member reviews it. We may ask follow-up questions — for example the building’s age, number of units, any HPD violation order numbers and deadlines, and access to the unit.
  3. We confirm whether it’s a fit. If it is, we refer your request to the lead-abatement contractor, who discusses the scope with you and provides an estimate. If it isn’t, we’ll tell you.
  4. You decide. Submitting an inquiry doesn’t commit you to anything, schedule any work, or change the status of an HPD violation.

Who handles your inquiry — and who does the work

LeadAbatementNYC.com receives and reviews inquiries from New York City property owners, managers, and contractors. Qualified requests are referred to an independent lead-abatement contractor. That contractor — not this website — performs any lead-paint work under its own agreement with you, and should provide its company name, certifications, and insurance information for you to review before any work begins.

Questions

Does submitting the form resolve my HPD violation?

No. A violation is corrected when the required work is done and documented, and the owner or managing agent certifies the correction to HPD by the deadline on the Notice of Violation. HPD may reinspect. An inquiry is simply the first step in finding out whether the contractor can help.

Do you assume my building has a violation?

No. We don’t assume anything from public records. If you’re not sure whether your building has an open violation, you can look it up on HPD Online or check your Notice of Violation.

What areas do you take inquiries from?

We take inquiries about properties in New York City. Whether a specific property and project can be served is confirmed when your inquiry is reviewed.

Is this legal advice?

No. The information on this site is general. For questions about your legal obligations, review HPD’s official guidance or speak with a qualified attorney.
